Black does one thing extremely well: it makes whatever sits on it look deliberate. Silver, brass, glass and white china all gain an edge against a black ground, which is why this shade turns up on evening tables far more often than on breakfast ones.
The catch is light. A black runner in a dim room disappears into the table and reads as a shadow, so it wants either daylight or candles — and it strongly prefers velvet over quilted cotton, because velvet gives the surface something to catch. Both are available on every design here.
It is also the most forgiving shade we sell. Crumbs show, spills mostly do not, and a cold wash returns it to where it started. If you host and you do not want to think about the tablecloth again, this is the page.
